Christ is My Captain

The poem 'Invictus' by William Ernest Henley, has come into my life quite a few times this year. It is a wonderful poem about courage, it definitely inspires the feeling that you can conquer even death if you are stubborn enough. However, there is one thing missing from this poem that has been on my mind since I first read it, and that is God.

Through all of the hardships that must be conquered in the poem, he stands alone, his soul is unconquerable because he is strong enough. The truth is though, that is not be the case. We cannot stand alone, sure we can for awhile; we can stand and fight by ourselves, but ultimately we are fighting a losing battle by fighting it alone.

If we invite God into our battles though... that is what turns the tide. Psalm 18 is a beautiful Psalm that shows that in our darkest hour, if we call on God He will be there to rescue us, we cannot and do not have to do it alone. Verses 18 and 19 of that chapter summarize why He comes to our rescue, and that is because He loves us.

That is such a beautiful promise, God loves us so much that He will fight our battles for us, all we have to do is trust in Him and call on His name in our time of distress. See, that's the catch though, we have to trust in Him and His will. Which is hard for us as humans when we so often say something similar to the end of the poem Invictus, which is: "I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul."

If we are truly Christians, that is not something we should be saying, if we are Christians we should be saying: Christ is the master of my fate, the captain of my soul. Because that is the ultimate truth, Christ is the only one who is in charge and He has the best plan for us.

And although it is hard to relinquish our own attempts to control and conquer things in our own way. We will be better off if we learn how to do that. Because I can't speak for the rest of you, but I know I would much rather fight a battle God's way; knowing I am going to win. Than fight a battle my way and most likely lose, or if I do win... what will I have lost in the process.

So yes, my choice is God. He is my Captain and my Master, and as hard as it is sometimes... I am reliquishing control and letting His will guide my life.
